The Nutcrackers have Started Appearing Downtown.

And no, I’m not talking about the amazing Maurice Sendack Nutcracker put on by the Pacific Northwest Ballet (although they sponsor the event). Taking their cue from the Cows on Parade of Chicago, we have the Nutcracker March to benefit the Northwest Center. Nutcracker statues, decorated by local artists, stand guard throughout downtown for their second year this holiday season. Those feeling particularly flush can bid on a nutcracker, with proceeds benefiting the Northwest Center.

On the whole, it makes for a great diversion downtown. Simply go to the website, download a map, and start your treasure hunt for the Nutcrackers listed. If making it through the whole list sounds like a bit much for you (there are 60), gather your family around the computer for a look at your favorite statues. Once everyone has a favorite (I’m partial to number 56, Chocolate Delight, myself) , find those on the map and check them off your list. It’s great to have that scavenger-hunt, on-an-advenutre feeling, you get to enjoy the holiday decorations around downtown, and when it gets too cold and windy you can duck into one of the billion local cafes for lattes and coccoas. It’s amazing how much having a purpose can help little feet forget their tired, though.

Happy Hunting!
