Eggs and Bunnies and. . . Tigers? Oh my!

Woodland Park Zoo will be holding Bunny Bounce the 6th this Saturday, April 7th from 9:30am to 2:00pm. Expect toddlers wandering through a sea of colorful plastic eggs (and stopping to gnaw experimentally on a few), tightly-choreographed age-segregated egg-hunts-on-the-hour in the North Meadow from 10:00am-2:00pm, a chance for photo opportunities with someone in a fuzzy bunny suit, and a real bunny to pet. All of this is free with zoo admission, plus there’s still a whole zoo to explore when you’ve exhausted the Easter possibilities.

the Toddler Egg Hunt at the 2006 Bunny Bounce. The picture from last year’s Bunny Bounce should give an idea of what the toddler egg “hunt” (I use the term so very loosely) looks like. Wow. Has Moon really changed that much in just a year? Highlights from last year included finishing up our rounds of the egg-centric festivities to find the Snow Leopard ripping apart a tasty bunny lunch — when we returned to the North Meadow, the petting bunny had vanished. Coincidence, or something more sinister? Those with sensitive souls may wish to bypass the Snow Leopard on their Bunny Bounce outing. Those who find it hilarious may wish to make an extra stop.

Also, please note the zoo is not stupid: the eggs your child gathers are empty. Stop off at a candy station posted outside the zoo exits to pick up a bag of sugary goodies. Ostensibly, this is for the protection of zoo animals. I prefer to imagine that it is for the protection of zoo employees, who don’t want to deal with thundering herds of sugared-children. Children can also choose to turn in the eggs they hunted, or keep them. All in all, this is a great family event and a wonderful way to spend a day out together as a family. Highly recommended.

In other zoo news, Monday April 9th offers the debut of the new tiger cub, complete with tiger-striped cupcakes by Cupcake Royale (possibly the only cupcakes with a myspace page) and a special ceremony to announce the name chosen by Seattle children (vote online through Midnight April 8th, simply click the “Vote Here” in the upper right of the screen and make your selection). The party starts at 11:30am, complete with Indonesian music to accompany the big announcement.

And as much as I love the zoo, and am excited about these events, I have to wonder if the timing of the tiger cub’s debut isn’t at least partially motivated by showing “the need” for the proposed 4 story Parking Garage before the meeting on April 10th?

  1. Oh poo. We had NO IDEA that today was egg hunt day. We don’t really do it in the UK, but it looks like loads of fun. Instead we stayed in and waited for someone to come and fix the water heater….
