Fitting a Bike Helmet: Professional Help

Brand-new bike helmet: $10. Peace of Mind: Priceless. As we had a few sunny days sneaking in between the cold, the desire to break out the tricycle was too much to overcome. Only problem? We’re near a bust street and Moon is trying for an early stunt career, often diving off of any moving vehicle she can mange to. While I knew the Cascade Bicycle Club provided helmet fittings and new helmets at the Bicycle Saturday & Sundays, the first one isn’t until May and there was no way Moon would last that long. The answer? A visit to Club headquarters in Magnuson Park.

A phone call and brief explanation got me transfered to the right extension, where I made an appointment for a “fitting”. At three in the afternoon on a weekday, the club was mostly empty. I had time to flip through the magazines on bicycling, and to chat a bit with staff. Right on time, we were met by a friendly woman with two different sizes of helmet in hand and not a licensed character in sight. She carefully checked the size of the helmet on my daughter’s head, adjusted the straps just so, and explained that while the current size was a perfect fit it wouldn’t last beyond this year. $10.00 later, we had a new bike helmet in hand and I could feel confident about the fit. Moon was thrilled to have a helmet of her very own, and she rode her trike around the paths of the park as soon as we stepped out. The only problem I’ve had is getting her to take the helmet off.

  1. Thanks for this post! Both my kids need new helmets and I need a low cost solution. I am thrilled that they will make appointments outside of the summer fitting events.
